Thomas Jefferson Part 2: “If John Adams Could Decide Not to Own Slaves, Why Couldn’t You?”
In Part 2 of the 1823 conversation with Thomas Jefferson, he is going to answer some difficult questions about Sally Hemings and the Indian problem created by the Louisiana Purchase,
He’ll also talk about his contentious relationship with his former Vice president, Aaron Burr.
And lastly, he’ll talk about the logic of owning slaves even though he was firmly against the institution.
Jefferson is almost always rated in the top ten of presidents. Yet, his legacy is one of massive accomplishments that are tainted with nearly unspeakable controversy. As you listen, you’ll be able to understand this pragmatic approach to making these decisions that will forever be debated by historians. He is no doubt a hero and a villain, possibly in equal measure. But without him, the United States might still be a tiny nation on the east coast surrounded by threats on all sides, or not exist at all.
